"The Complete Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen" is indeed a treasure trove of stories that have enchanted readers for generations. The book offers a comprehensive collection of Andersen's fairy tales, translated into English with remarkable accuracy and preserving the charm and wisdom of the original Danish versions. The tales, ranging from the sweet and innocent "The Little Mermaid" and "The Emperor's New Clothes" to the thought-provoking "The Ugly Duckling" and "The Snow Queen," are filled with imagination, creativity, and profound life lessons. Each story is unique in its narrative style, character development, and underlying themes, making it a fascinating read for both children and adults. The book's translation is commendable, maintaining the delicate balance between simplicity and depth that is characteristic of Andersen's writing. The language is accessible, allowing young readers to easily engage with the stories, while also offering nuanced interpretations for older readers to appreciate. Furthermore, the book is beautifully illustrated, adding a visual dimension to the stories and enhancing the reading experience. The detailed drawings help bring the characters and settings to life, making the tales even more enchanting. In conclusion, "The Complete Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen" is a must-have for any lover of literature, fairy tales, or great storytelling. It is a book that can be revisited time and time again, with each reading offering new insights and appreciations. Whether read for pleasure or studied for academic purposes, this collection is a true testament to Andersen's storytelling genius.

The Brothers Grimm were collectors of true folktales - marchen, in German - who wanted an ethnographic survey of the newly-unified/unifying German state. They traveled the length and breadth of the German-speaking world and recorded enormous ranges of stories in their multiple forms as they appeared in different areas. Their morphological analysis of these stories - that is, their structural “dissection” of the plots and details of them - formed the basis of modern folklore studies. Anderson, in contrast, did not have national identity on his mind but rather moral education. While he based his original stories on the folk tales of Denmark and similar areas, his aim was to emulate the style of those stories to tell tales in order to reach the widest audience possible. Famously his original “Little Mermaid,” for instance, dies after making a bargain with the forces of evil AND SERVES HER RIGHT, goes the moral of the story. While there are morals in many of the German madchen collected by the Grimms, the lessons they teach might strike us as unusual. In “The Devil’s Stinky Brother,” for instance, the Devil turns out to be a pretty good employer who keeps his word even when the human he takes in doesn’t meet every piece of their original bargain. The human, in fact, ends up successful back in the mortal realm after his hitch with Old Scratch. So: Grimms = collectors who just cleaned up what they found into a canon of stories fit for analysis. Anderson = proto-Dickensian moralist who used folk tales as a template for original work.
