在《寬容》裏，房龍從人文主義立場出發，從歷史源頭反省人類的愚昧和偏執，他發現對於異己的恐懼是所有不寬容的起因。由於信仰、道德、風俗等的不同，人類形成了不同的利益羣體。每個羣體在偏執和固執所構成的壁壘森嚴的城堡裏，抵禦着外界和來自外界的影響。偏執和固執給人類帶來了很多悲劇，許多追求自由新知的人物爲衝出這壁壘而殉身。
很耐心地讀完了這本書。這應該不是一本歷史書，更像一個學識淵博的老人在娓娓道來幾千年的人性。大學畢業的時候讀過，那時候是感到驚訝，覺得人類怎麼會如此不可理喻。後來又讀過幾次，每每心浮氣躁讀了一半又放下，因爲沒由頭的越讀越煩躁。現在老了，再一次讀這本書時，終於心靜如水，沒有喫驚，沒有煩躁，只是靜靜讀那些血淋淋的故事，累了就看看外面的萬家燈火。
A very meaningful book to be recommended to our contemporary youth. As the author wrote in the last chapter, at the bottom of intolerance lies fear. We shall overcome and triumph over our fear. Most of my comments in this version of the book are corrections of typos. Hope these edits will make it easier for those who read it after.
The aim of this book is not just to defend tolerance, it also presents a world where differences are cherished. It is highly recommended to anyone who seeks to understand the importance of respecting diverse viewpoints as well as maintaining social cohesion. Tolerance should never be deemed as a sign of weakness but a way to demonstrate the strength and maturity in both individuals and society as a whole.
