Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date:❶ Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shine, 5 And often is his gold complexion dimmed; And every fair from fair sometime declines, By chance,❷ or nature’s changing course untrimmed: But thy eternal summer shall not fade, Nor ❸ lose possession of that fair thou owest; 10 Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade When in eternal lines to time thou growest. So long as men can breathe or eyes can see, So long lives this, and this gives life to thee. — William Shakespere thee [古] pron(obj) = you thou [古] pron(subj) = you art [古] v = are temperate adj 溫和 lease n 租借期限 hath [古] v = has eye of heaven n-phr 太陽 complexion n 面貌 dim v 遮暗 fair n 美好的人/事物;美色 untrim v 剝奪了裝飾(美色) owest [古] v = owe擁有 brag v 誇口 wanderest [古] v = wander shade n 陰影,即死亡之陰谷 growest [古] v = grow 可否讓我來把你比作夏日 可否讓我來把你比作夏日? 詩中有兩項主要修辭手法,一為換喻法(metonymy):以a summer’s day表示the summer season,“一天”代表“一季”。 增值英語 ❶ And summer’s lease hath all too short a date too short a date = the date is too short。 This is too difficult a task for me to handle.(This task is too difficult for me to handle.) What he just said is too good a promise to be true.(His promise is too good to be true.) ❷ By chance...untrimmed... by chance(adv-phr),解“偶然;意外地”: It was only by chance that I opened the drawer and found the diary you lost. He slipped by chance. He chanced on the solution to his problem. We chanced upon Mr Lee in the museum yesterday. ❸ Thy eternal summer shall not fade,/Nor lose possession of that fair... He has neither visited nor written to his aunt since he left China. I’m not going, nor is John, nor is Mary. neither或not不與or連用。例如× He neither visited or wrote to his aunt. Men may come and men may go, But I go on forever. ~Tennyson~ 人往人來,我卻常在 ~丹尼生~ To — One word is too ❶ often profaned For me to ❶ profane it, One feeling too falsely disdain’d For thee to disdain it; One hope is too like despair 5 For prudence to smother, And pity from thee more dear Than that ❷ from another. I can give not what men call love: But wilt thou accept not 10 The worship the heart lifts above And the heavens reject not, The desire of the moth for the star, Of the night for the morrow, The devotion to ❸ something afar 15 From the sphere of our sorrow? Aim at the stars, but keep your feet on the ground. The desire of the moth for the star, Of the night for the morrow,(13-14行) 來闡釋抽象的意念:The devotion to something afar(15行)。 增值英語 ❶ One word is too often profaned/For me to profane it too adv(for sb) to-v:too表示“過多”。接着for引出的介詞短語for me指出有關的人,再接to不定式,表示有關動作to profane it。(另見第1篇❶) It is too hot for the construction workers to work at noon. The shoes are too big for the child to walk comfortably. ❷ pity from thee more dear/Than that from another 這句子比較pity from thee和pity from another,但為了避免重複pity故用that代替,因此不能漏掉that。 The streets of Mongkok are more crowded than those of the adjacent areas.(這裏比較the streets of Mongkok和the streets of the adjacent districts;those = the streets)旺角區的街道比鄰近各地區的街道更擁擠。 Mongkok is more crowded than its adjacent areas.(這裏比較Mongkok和its adjacent districts)旺角區比鄰近各地區更擁擠。 Mary’s skirt is more expensive than Lily’s.(Lily’s = Lily’s skirt)瑪麗的裙子比莉莉的貴。 The food kept in the refrigerator is fresher than that kept in the cupboard.(that = the food)放在冰箱裏的食物比放在櫥櫃的新鮮。 than後面單獨使用代詞,則必須用賓語代詞me、him、her、them等。 She is more honest than him. × She is more honest than he. She is more honest than he is. ❸ The devotion to something afar... devotion to sb/sth表示獻身於/盡忠於某人/某事物 Her devotion to her profession is admirable. Nothing is nobler than a mother’s devotion to her children. Song When I am dead, my dearest, Sing no ❶ sad songs for me; Plant thou no roses at my head, Nor shady cypress tree: Be the green grass above me 5 With showers and dewdrops wet; And if thou wilt, remember, ❷ And if thou wilt, forget. I shall not see the shadows, I shall not feel the rain; 10 I shall not hear the nightingale Sing on, as if ❸ in pain: And dreaming through the twilight That doth not rise nor ❹ set, Haply I may remember, 15 And haply may forget. For in that sleep of death what dreams may come, When we have shuffled off this mortal coil, Must give us pause; ~ Shakespeare: Hamlet ~ 我們一旦擺脫了塵世的牽纏, 在死的睡眠裏會做些甚麼夢, 一想到就不能不躊躇。 Sing no sad songs.../Plant... no roses....(2-3行) And if thou wilt, remember,/And if thou wilt, forget.(7-8行) I shall not see.../I shall not feel.../I shall not hear....(9-11行) Haply I may remember,/And haply may forget.(15-16行) 增值英語 ❶ Sing no sad songs for me;/Plant thou no roses at my head, 這裏sing no song(v + no + n)相當於do not sing any song(not + v + any + n),前者語氣較強,後者較普通: Make no breakfast for me this morning./Don’t make any breakfast for me this morning. He ate no food all day./He didn’t eat any food all day. ❷ And if thou wilt, remember,/And if thou wilt, forget. If you will(= want to) remember, you will remember/If you will(= want to) forget, you will forget。 Those who can, stay and help; those who can’t, go away. Those who want to, finish the work now; those who don’t want to, do it later. ❸ Sing on, as if in pain: as if/as though(conj)解“好像,彷彿”,說明在假設情況下做某事,由as if引出的從句多用過去式,以表示虛擬的、非真實的。 He works night and day as if he were never tired. The patient opened his mouth as if to speak.
