I’ve found a Chinese person who can’t recognize all 26 letters but speaks English fluently. In fact, for seven years, no one has made her memorize the 26 letters or write down phonetic symbols, yet her spoken English is so fluent. Before meeting her in person, I thought she was a white woman. She’s actually Chinese! And she’s never been abroad! Don’t think this is impossible. It’s like speaking Hunanese, Jiangxi dialect, or Beijing dialect. Language is just a tool for communication. As long as people can understand and hear you, it’s fine. When speaking quickly, if the pronunciation is a bit off or strange, people may laugh. But it’s not out of genuine mockery. It’s just friendly teasing among friends, which is quite normal. However, when it comes to English, people treat it as something sacred and put it on a pedestal. They expect you to speak without grammatical errors and be very fluent. They want you to reach native-level proficiency in a day, or even become a genius in English within a minute, able to say whatever you want. But the reality is, English requires input. You have to hear a sentence before you can say it. You have to understand it before you can comprehend it. You have to think about saying it, whether consciously or subconsciously, maybe even in a dream. In any case, it has to exist in your world. You can’t say something you’ve never heard of. You can’t speak what you haven’t prepared for. When can you speak English fluently? You can speak as soon as you open your mouth. When will your spoken English improve? By speaking every day. Practice makes perfect. Keep speaking and have lots of exposure and practice. How long does it take for your spoken English to reach native-level proficiency? Do you want to reach the level of an American elementary school student, a middle school student, or a 20-year-old adult? If it’s a 20-year-old adult, assuming they started organizing language at six. If she speaks for only 20 minutes a day, 20*30=600 minutes, which is 10 hours a month. In a year, that’s 120 hours. Calculate how long it would take her to reach the level of a 20-year-old. Did your native language become as fluent as it is now after just an hour or two of speaking? Then your English won’t reach native-level proficiency just by speaking for a few scattered hours. But with deliberate practice, you can reach the level of an American middle school student within 1,000 hours. If you expect your English to change dramatically overnight, you’re not being realistic. You’re just dreaming. Using any tool inevitably involves the possibility of making mistakes. Mistakes are an inevitable part of success, learning, and growth. Since they are an inevitable part of the process, don’t worry too much about your mistakes or what others think. There will always be people who don’t like you, and there will always be those who are narrow-minded and like to nitpick. It’s really simple to speak English fluently. First, write down what you want to say in Chinese. Then translate it into English. Use Google or any app you’re comfortable with and like. Keep recording what you want to say, what you want to tell foreigners, translate it, and read it repeatedly or memorize it. The next time you meet someone, you’ll be able to speak it for real.
