Brave New World is a dystopian novel written in 1931 by English author Aldous Huxley, and published in 1932. The title of this book derives from Miranda’s speech in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest, (Act V, Scene I). Set in London in the year AD 2540 (632 A.F.—“After Ford”—in the book), the novel anticipates developments in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation, and classical conditioning that combine profoundly to change society. Huxley followed this book with a reassessment in an essay, Brave New World Revisited (1958), and with Island (1962), his final novel. In 1999, the Modern Library ranked Brave New World fifth on its list of “the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century”. In 2003, Robert McCrum writing for The Observer included Brave New World chronologically at number 53 in “the top 100 greatest novels of all time”, and the novel was listed at number 87 on the BBC’s survey The Big Read.
What Orwell feared were those who would ban books. What Huxley feared was that there would be no reason to ban a book, for there would be no one who wanted to read one. Orwell feared those who would deprive us information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us. Huxley feared the truth would be drowned in a sea of irrelevance. Orwell feared we would become a captive culture. Huxley feared we would become a trivial culture, preoccupied with some equivalent of the feelies, the orgy porgy, and the centrifugal bumblepuppy. As Huxley remarked in 'Brave New World revisited,' the civil libertarians and rationalists who are ever on the alert to oppose tyranny 'failed to take into account man's almost infinite appetite for distractions.' In 'Nineteen Eighty-Four' people are controlled by inflicting pain. In 'Brave New World' people are controlled by inflicting pleasure. In short, Orwell feared that what we hate will ruin us. Huxley feared that what we love will ruin us.
3. Am I also living in this so-called brave new world? I believe the answer is yes. I’m living right in this world now, where freedom has been traded for comfort, and individuality for conformity. Like Huxley’s vision, we are lulled into contentment by distraction, pacified by pleasure, and controlled by subtle, invisible forces. Yet, beneath the surface of this engineered happiness lies a profound emptiness, a world where true connection and meaning are lost. The question is not just whether I live in this world, but whether I am awake to its reality—or merely another cog in its well-oiled machine.
Directly reflects a lot we are facing right now… highly recommended. Made me more aware of myself (individualism) and my true feelings.
“But I don't want comfort.I want God.I want poetry.I want real danger.I want freedom.I want goodness.I want sin.” “I claim the right to be unhappy. I claim them all.” 希望你也聽到你心中Mr.Savage的聲音。
