A Room with a View

A heart with love and respect herself 有愛與自尊的內心 “Lucy, struggling against straitlaced Victorian attitudes，falls in love with socially unsuitable George. caught up in a claustrophobic world of pretentiousness and rigidity, she ultimately rejected her fiancé and instead to wed her true love.” The above is the introduction in the book. In fact, the story is really simple. The following is my understanding: Lucy, a young lady from a middle-class family, spend her vocation in Florence with her older unmarried cousin Bartlett. They lived in a north-facing room without view. In the hotel, they met George and his son, who acted boldly and straightforwardly. They were willing to exchange their room with a view. George also expressed his love to Lucy, but Lucy refused. After returning to England, Lucy accepted the marriage engagement with Cecille of the same class. In the end, Lucy saw Cecil's arrogance and spiritual barrenness and recognized her heart. With the encouragement of her cousin, Lucy chose her true love of George finally.

A Room with a View is a story about a young English woman named Lucy Honeychurch. She travels to Italy and meets a man named George Emerson. George is different from the polite English men Lucy knows — he is honest, open, and full of passion. Their meeting makes Lucy start to think about what she really wants in life. When Lucy returns to England, she becomes confused. Society expects her to marry a rich and proper man, Cecil, but her heart remembers George. In the end, Lucy learns to listen to her own feelings and chooses love and freedom over social rules. This book is about self-discovery, love, and courage. It tells us that we should not live only to please others. The “room with a view” is a symbol of an open heart and a wider world. I like this story because it is gentle but powerful. It shows that real happiness comes when we dare to be true to ourselves.

I pored through the novel amidst the pitter-patters of rain, which usually runs for days on ends in this season in the lower reach of Yangtze. The reading is enjoyable though the meaning of some of the expressions could be illusive. This is unavoidable for readers with English as their second language because you have cultural barrier to break. But when you make it, you will feel a reinforced inner strength. That's the beauty of reading English novels. While enjoying the story, you also pick up some authentic expressions and have the fun of playing games as you meet the challenges and crack nuts in the process. The novel is not so intriguing as far as the plot is concerned, but it is interpersed with philosophical thoughts that may trigger your reflection and sympathy. Beside, reading English novel is a better way to experience the life and folk customs of the relevant country in specific period better than historic records or any other literal forms.
