Gone with the wind is set in the south of America before the American Civil War happened to several years after the war ended. It depicts how the Southerners lived a prosperous pastoral life, which after the war turned to a disturbing, poor life and was gradually being reconstructed. In such a turn of events, this war also witnessed the growth of Scarlett from a sheltered daughter of a landowners to an independent, strong-willed and nonconformist woman who is brave to fight against adversities and pursue love. I've seldom ever read such long stories but what this book captures me for almost 2 months is the vivid depiction of each character. Melanie is so kind and pure that I am quite impressed, and Rhett behaved so flippantly but he loved Scarlett so much. But among them, Scarlett is my favorite one, as I found so many common traits between us. We are similarly flawed, obstinate, snobbish, selfish, indifferent to relationships and ignorant of surrounding love. Nevertheless, I also found that we are both brave and determined to fight for our own interests and adaptive to changing environments. When Scarlett is criticized by the Southerners, I also started to reflect upon myself: whether the interests I struggled to gain tread on and are built upon other people's misfortune or kindness? When pursuing the so-called success, have I been ignoring other people's feeling? Sometimes I was too selfish. That's why I am eager to see how Scarlett grows through reading one page after another. As having seen Scarlett as a mirror of myself, my heart really sank when reading near the end of the story. Everyone who loves Scarlett was gone like the wind! I was really surprised when I read about her daughter, Bonnie's sudden death. After it followed the loss of mind of Rhett and death of Melanie... I really thought it would be a happy ending without the last several chapters. But the ending makes sense to me as it finally reveals all the truth about love for Scarlett: she was only fond of a young Ashely and did not love a real him; Rhett is the one who loved her but she always turned a blind eye to it. Without the final few chapters, Scarlett would never know about love. And without knowing about love, one's life cannot be fulfilled. So this ending seems quite reasonable. Scarlett understands love and Rhett is able to vulnerably talk about how he loved her. Although his heart was broken, Scarlett is so courageous that I believe she will finally win Rhett's heart back! Anyway, it is not that Rhett did not love Scarlett anymore but it is just that he waits too long for Scarlett's love and he dares not to be vulnerable about love again. Anyway, tomorrow is another day and hope will still arise from the red earth of Tara.
