This book really appeals to me. Esther was a brilliant and talented girl. She loved reading and writing. She was presented to the reader as a silent and calm observer at first. Working as a reporter, she had seen the splendid view of the big city, broadened her eyes, and met different kinds of women. Her life stretched in front of her in various paths, just like a fig tree, with innumerable possibilities. Then what kind of person did she want to be? She wanted to be a writer. She signed up for the writing course and felt quite confident about the result, but it went against her expectation. She was turned down by the university and was lost. Growing up as the girl who was always the model, Esther was totally confused about her identity because of this refusal. Was she really that excellent? Or could she really become a writer in the future? Was it because her writing pieces weren't good enough to impress the professors of the university after years of studying and practicing? Gradually, Esther began to feel empty and meaningless. She wasn't strong enough to take the result and think about another way out to make a living. Writing, eating and even sleeping became serious problems for her. What was worse, nobody understood her, even the doctors and her own mother. They thought she was sick or crazy, and treated her with medicine and shock treatment. The whole society, the whole social network seemed to be turning against her. Nobody supported her. She felt like there was a bell jar in the air which kept shrinking and sparing no air. It was really suffocating. I kind of get that feeling. People around you are familiar with the excellent version of you. They think you are hard-working and are supposed to behave well all the time. As time goes by, you feel terrified by the idea of letting them down, because people all want to hear compliments instead of sighs. Yet the invisible pressure will always be hanging over your head, and it seems that if you make one wrong step, a stream of freezing cold water will pour out from nowhere and make you soaked from the skin to your heart. But there are some things that no matter how hard you try, they are still unreachable, and that is when you will feel like you're drowning. It is not until then that you feel like a person struggling in the sea, with no sight of the shore, surrounded by endless water, and feeling as if something is pulling your leg. Sometimes you may want to kill yourself and end all this pain, but you also feel upset about why you have to be the person who pays with her life and gives in to the suppression? When Esther went into the asylum, she began her process of finding herself and a sense of belonging. At that time, the asylum was the place where all the estranged women got together. They were exiled from society and mistreated by people. When they met each other, they didn't appreciate each other either, because they had learned how to judge people by society's standards. Then Esther met Dr. Nolan, who never judged her and just listened and cared for her. She allowed Esther to feel free to express her rebellion against her mother's good intentions and let her do almost everything she wanted. She even told Esther where to get a fitting (to avoid getting pregnant). It was a significant move for Esther, because getting birth control was like gaining control over your own body. You wouldn't ever worry about whether you would suddenly stop menstruating, have a baby and become a mother. She even found a guy in town and made it through a very bad first night. By becoming the "crazy" woman, Esther got to do lots of bold actions, but did she really successfully rebuild her identity? Or did she just learn how to pretend to be a normal person in society? The bell jar seemed to be hanging in the air; it might be safe for a moment, but how long would the peace last? As Esther thought: But I wasn't sure. I wasn't sure at all.How did I know that someday--at college, in Europe, somewhere,anywhere--the bell jar, with its stifling distortions, wouldn't descend again? Esther kept saying to herself that Joan was like another version of her who had almost the same experience. Joan always performed well and had the most privileges in the asylum as a patient. But she hung herself beside a pond near the hospital one night. Why did she do that? Did she really get better, or did she still have a hollow heart? Or maybe she was dying as a substitute for Esther. Suicide could be a possible ending to Esther's life. I took a deep breath and listened to the old brag of my heart. I am, I am, I am. The story ends with the interview between Esther and the board of the hospital. Before she went in, her inner voice said: "I am, I am, I am." But it's a brag. Had Esther found out where her true self was? Or in fact, was there nothing left in her?

You Are the Worst裏的Gretchen,“正常”的時候像極了典型的美國小妞,買醉、毒舌、戀愛、開party、找樂子,然而深夜她還是會忍不住開車出去在洛杉磯城的山頭掩面哭泣,甚至在Jimmy越靠越近後親手毀掉這段始於casual sex卻越來越像極了愛情的關係。
