Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions—Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley's mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters...
To be honest, before opening this book published by East China University of Science and Technology Press, I was already deeply captivated by the movie. Pixar created a colorful and vivid animated journey — a surprising, adorable, and deeply touching “brainstorm” roller coaster, which also served as an entertaining and educational mini-lecture on psychology. I must say, reading the text provided a wonderful experience. The movie images are flowing and roaring, while the words in the book offer a tranquil space for thoughts to settle. Especially when describing abstract concepts in Riley’s mind — such as the collapse and reconstruction of her “Personality Islands” — the slower pace of language actually makes the emotional impact more profound. Reading feels like re-examining the cornerstones that construct our own personalities: family, friendship, hobbies, and honesty. What impressed me most in the book is precisely the setting of Riley’s “islands.” The key to Riley’s sanity and happiness are her islands — of family, friendship, playfulness, and hockey, a sport she loves. Psychology tells us that when we have solid personality islands, even if you are temporarily lost, you can eventually find your way back home. The author vividly captures the essence of the film: you are not your emotions — you are not even the thoughts that flash through your mind in a split second. You are a complex being woven together by everything you love, every cherished moment, and countless tiny fragments of time. One of the greatest things about Inside Out is that it teaches us to make room for sadness. In both the movie and the book, this central theme resounds powerfully. In the story, Joy tries desperately to squelch Sadness. Her motivation is pure: she wants only for Riley to be happy, because Sadness poses a threat in her eyes. But her efforts are misguided. Riley needs to feel sadness; doing so helps her tell the truth about her feelings, mourn for the life she left in Minnesota, connect with her parents, and make peace with being in San Francisco. In today’s society, which chases “efficient happiness,” we always try to escape anxiety and repress gloom, as if negative emotions were meaningless defects. But Riley’s tears ultimately bring the warmth of family back, and at the critical moment, Sadness touches the core memories and turns them blue, allowing Riley to stop running away and finally open up to her parents. Your experience of sadness deepens your experience of joy — making room for sadness makes you emotionally stronger and more resilient because you understand yourself better, allowing your emotions to serve you rather than rule you. No matter how many times one experiences it, the story surrounding Bing Bong still brings a lump to the throat. One reader captured the universal sentiment perfectly: “Seeing Bing Bong still makes my eyes water…”. This character — born of Riley’s childhood imagination, a stitched-together creature of candy, cat sounds, and an elephant trunk — is clumsy yet sincere. In the book, when Bing Bong fades away after helping Joy jump out of the Memory Dump, the emotional tension in the words is no less poignant than the suffocating melancholy and silent sacrifice depicted on screen. Bing Bong is a microcosm of all the whimsy we lose as we age — it will eventually be forgotten, but the warmth and strength it once gave us transforms into the foundation of “imagination” and “creativity,” forever etched into our personalities. If, like me, you have already watched the movie, take a quiet moment to read these words. They will gently remind you: growing up is not about becoming numb, but learning to let every emotion find its own place in your heart.Saying goodbye is sometimes for the sake of a better reunion. As Riley bid farewell to the snow of Minnesota, she moved toward a tougher youth in the warm embrace of her family under the California sunshine. Sadness matters, joy matters — and you, yourself, matter more than any single emotion. Finally, let me end with a line from the book, for everyone who is growing up or has ever grown up: “Things might have gotten turned inside out and even upside down and around, but everything was going to be just fine.”
My English name is Riley, named after this little girl. I like this movie, it's creative and enjoyable. When I saw this movie years ago, I actually didn't like Joy at first. And now, I graduated from university and worked for years but I am strange that I still don't like Joy when i read this book. ( I mean at first, I like her when she gets back to the headquarter.) Just like Sadness and Anger taking control in mom's and dad's brains, Joy is a leader of the team in Riley's brain. But i think that she is not a good teammate, not to mention being a leader. She does well in making Riley happy and of coures, she is doing everything to make Riley a happy girl. And I know, the other emotions want the same thing, too. That's why she is the leader. But she doesn't respect the other Emotions. She always wants her to take control. And sometimes she is just like, wanting the other emotions to stay back and "control themselves", just don't touch the console. Although it's like Sadness who brings trouble, but actually, it's Joy who is the time bomb. Working with her will cause problem, it may not emerge now, but it will show up eventually. That's why Sadness does wrong thing. Sadness has her own personality, she is born sad. Not looking on the bright side isn't her fault. But you can't let her hide her feelings, that will just make things worse. But Joy ignores her, blames her, tells her not to be near the memories, and dosen't listen to what Sadness wanna say. And she even wants to go back to headquarter alone. Sadness reads the manual and knows better than her, but she always insists on her own opinions, which almost proved to be wrong. And the most hurtful thing is, she chooses to listen to Bing Bong but Sadness. Bing Bong and her just know each other the first time, but Sadness is her teammate like, forever! I know it's just book and movie but I just feel sorry about Sadness. She deserves to be treated better. The book and the movie ends up well that Joy and Sadness finally become a team. A real team, with trust and respect to each other. That makes me feel happy and I like this Joy. Riley is young and the emotions are still new to each other. So, this adventure is kinda like team building. Even though it's difficult, it has a good ending. I know when we are in a team, some of the teammates might not be the one who we expect. But showing respect and being understanding are things that we can do, at least. And we can't be like Joy at first, being an arrogant leader (in subtle), and do all the things. We have to let all the teammates get together and cooperate. Or else, we will never change the first impressions of them and don't know what they are good at. There are things that we can't do just by ourselves, teammates, family, friends, tutors are so important in our lives. All of us are still learning. And we always bump into troublesomes and we have to learn things and deal with them at the same time. Every one makes mistakes but every one deserves a second chance to make things right. We are all Sadness and Joy, and life will tell us how to become better.
Peace and love.
Things might have gotten turned inside out and even upside down and around, but everything was going to be just fine.Because when we felt sad,our family members and friends would help us to solve the problems and cheer us up,at the same time, after feeling sad,we want to be happy.
