Wuthering Heights is Emily Brontë’s only novel. Written between October 1845 and June 1846,Wuthering Heights was published in 1847 under the pseudonym “Ellis Bell”; Brontë died the following year, aged 30. Wuthering Heights and Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey were accepted by publisher Thomas Newby before the success of their sister Charlotte’s novel, Jane Eyre . After Emily’s death, Charlotte edited the manuscript of Wuthering Heights , and arranged for the edited version to be published as a posthumous second edition in 1850. Although Wuthering Heights is now widely regarded as a classic of English literature, contemporary reviews for the novel were deeply polarised; it was considered controversial because its depiction of mental and physical cruelty was unusually stark, and it challenged strict Victorian ideals of the day regarding religious hypocrisy, morality, social classes and gender inequality. The English poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, although an admirer of the book, referred to it as “A fiend of a book – an incredible monster [...] The action is laid in hell, – only it seems places and people have English names there.” The novel has inspired adaptations, including film, radio and television dramatisations, a musical by Bernard J. Taylor, a ballet, operas, and a 1978 song by Kate Bush.

★★★★★

how evil, fierce, yet breathtaking love

★★★☆☆

★★★★★

The book often reminds me of Van Gogh’s works in his later years. Wild and passionate love stories are just like strangely twisted lines and extremely exaggerated colors in a piece of rough canvas. The whole Wuthering Heights is a great metaphor of destructive and stifling storm repressed under the gloomy sky. The distortion of love and evil hidden in the novel seems to be dark depths of humanity. I am impressed by Lockwood, the storyteller. On the one hand, he can be considered as a special character gradually losing his objectivity. From his perspective, readers are brought into this space which was full of hostility to the outside world. Interestingly, Lockwood quickly got involved with people of Wuthering Heights when he met masters there although he appeared removed at first. On the other hand, Lockwood was trapped in Wuthering Heights. In order to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life, he came to Wuthering Heights. Facing merciless reality, he chose to act like a “misanthrope” and found a place to escape. But confronting with the torture and dilemma from the bottom of our hearts, we may find nowhere to go.

After reading this books, I feel quite confused about the whole story it tells, which is because of my not so enough knowledge and other more things. However, the story it tells has its own charm. I would not say I've comprehended all the scenes the book shows, but I kind of like it for something is completely mysterious in the atmosphere of Wuthering Heights. I wish I could read it twice another day, perhaps years later, and make a second remark on it.

★★★☆☆

Twice in the past I picked up Wuthering Heights, twice I put it down even before I had finished chapter 1. Now I’ve finished reading it I can say I like Bronte's writing techniques, e.g. using nature to say about something else, her use of the English language, the clever structure of the book. And I also ask why people may feel ambiguous about it. I think perhaps like me many people aren't sure what kind of story it tells. Love story? Can mutually torturing relationships be called love? Ghost story? But for what point? Social realism? The characters hardly have anything to do with anyone else outside the two houses. It reflects the caste system of the time, but is hardly a critique of it (cf. Charles Dickens). Secondly, there's so much ambiguity surrounding the characters, and none of them is even likeable. I like Nelly best, but the story is not even about Nelly. But I guess trying to understand why we don't like a particular work is also important. Especially this one — why is it even a classic?

★★★★★

A wonderful book which will enrich your notion of love.
