Tender Is the Night is a novel by American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald. It was his fourth and final completed novel, and was regarded the greatest book of Fitzgerald. The novel almost mirrors the events of Fitzgerald and Zelda’s lives. In 1932, Fitzgerald’s wife Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald was hospitalized for schizophrenia in Baltimore, Maryland. The author rented the La Paix estate in the suburb of Towson to work on this book, the story of the rise and fall of Dick Diver, and his wife Nicole. Rosemary Hoyt, a beautiful eighteen-year-old movie starlet, on vacation with her mother, arrives at a rather deserted portion of the French Riviera. There, Rosemary meets Dick Diver, a handsome American psychologist in his thirties with whom she instantly falls in love. Dick and his wife, Nicole, are exemplars of grace and sophistication, and move among a social set of similarly extraordinary people. Rosemary becomes part of this world, and in the gay times that follow, Dick begins to reciprocate Rosemary’s feelings for him. Everything goes splendidly until, after an alcoholic friend of the Divers accidentally kills a man, Rosemary discovers Dick comforting Nicole, who has had a mental breakdown…
As sea and sky appeared below them in a thin, hot line Rome: Climax — Dick finally understands he can’t go back. Dignity, charm, moral force — all gone. Only pity and shame remain.”
Knotted at her throat she wore a lilac scarf that even in the achromatic sunshine cast its color up to her face and down around her moving feet in a lilac shadow. her face was hard, almost stern, save for the soft gleam of piteous doubt that looked from her green eyes. Just as the personal qualities of Extraordinary people can make themselves plain in an unaccounted change of expression, so the intensely calculated perfection of villa diana transpired all at once through such minute failure as the chance apparition of a maid in the background or the perversity of a cook.
“Forlorn! the very word is like a bell To toll me back from thee to my sole self! Adieu! the fancy cannot cheat so well As she is fam'd to do, deceiving elf. Adieu! adieu! thy plaintive anthem fades Past the near meadows, over the still stream, Up the hill-side; and now 'tis buried deep In the next valley-glades: Was it a vision, or a waking dream? Fled is that music:—Do I wake or sleep?” —— Ode to a Nightingale
The well-written emotions and environment do not cover for a truly mediocre story. An overrated book and a waste of my 16 hours.

Dick was a good husband to me for six years,” Nicole said. “All that time I never suffered a minute’s pain because of him, and he always did his best never to let anything hurt me.” Baby’s lower jaw projected slightly as she said: “That’s what he was educated for.”
He tried to arrange an attitude but no logic seemed forthcoming.
