it fiercely criticizes the phenomenon of comprehensive exploitation over underprivileged laborer in France at the time,and the detailed portrayal of then chambermaids' daily life make me somewhat sympathetic with their pathetic impasse,in which most of them were obliged to be servants on account of the poor background of their original family,and were universally abused and ill-treated by their masters who oftentimes didn't regard them as people with due respect,however that was better situation than slaves living in America.for the story part,Joseph didn't at all love the protagonist,who just was his tool to be leveraged making profits,only money and the worldly game in his eyes
