Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no matter—tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... And one fine morning—So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.
The first 50 pages of the book was so horrendously slow going that it seemed aimless. I kept feeling like I was being pulled from one random scene to another without a single clue what it was that Fitzgerald tried to show me. I nearly abandoned it halfway. The story did start rolling from there and I was finally in the familiar rhythms of a fiction again - fast rolling, enchanting and hard to put down. The author certainly has a way with words; the language was beautiful. And he is a sharp observer of humanity. I liked Gatsby and it was a sad sad story. Fitzgerald writes poetically but not so sure about his story-telling skill.
