The light which puts out our eyes is darkness to us. Only that day dawns to which we are awake. There is more day to dawn. The sun is but a morning star.
Can’t abide Thoreau’s philosophy at all, in which he called out himself or his readers to cultivate poverty. I can’t for a single word discern a slice piece of quiet mind either. On the contrary, he was pulled apart himself by all the extreme words, poorest and richest, almshouse and palace. His so-called paradise doesn’t exist at all, or floats high in the air. Our happiness depends on the personal achievement or realisation of our personal value, our contribution to the society, in the physical form as our house or car, and in the spiritual form as our love to the family and the country. Thoreau was utterly ego-centric. He was not only poor in physical life, but also impoverished in his empty mind. He cited quite a few words from Confucius. But he failed to catch the best part, but slid into the deep, narrow well of a frog. Confucius’s idol, Guanzi said: “ a full barn brings civility; ample food and clothes bring a sense of shame and honour”. Material possession is the solid foundation of a peaceful mind, which would be a mirage if anyone tried to cultivate on the sand of poverty.
Walden — A Serendipitous Encounter Passing by the café named Walden Pond at noon every day, I’ve heard the cashier playing Jacky Cheung’s I’m Really Hurt nonstop for a week. I can’t help wondering if she’s just gone through a heartbreak. As the melody lingered, I opened WeChat Reading and found a free English edition of Walden waiting for me. It feels like fate. Perhaps this quiet, introspective book is just what I need right now — a moment of calm to balance the faint melancholy in the air.
