Orlando greatly alters the concept of time. How can a mere mortal live for hundreds of years? Through Orlando’s unusually long life, Virginia Woolf frees the character from ordinary human limits and allows the reader to observe changing ideas of gender, society, and identity across different historical periods. Orlando’s transformation from male to female gives both Orlando and the reader a profound insight into the difficulties women face in many areas of life, especially in relation to social status, freedom, and achievement. After becoming a woman, Orlando experiences the restrictions and inconveniences imposed on females, revealing how deeply gender inequality infiltrates every aspect of a woman’s life. This clearly reflects Woolf’s feminist perspective and her concern with the limited opportunities available to women. And plus my favorite quotes are found in this book.
