It was the first reading series to enforce strict vocabulary control over selections. William S. Gray, a renowned educational psychologist and reading authority from the University of Chicago became a senior co-author with William H. Elson in creating this series. The authors have attempted to provide an interesting, purposeful, and comprehensive reading course for children. To achieve this purpose the authors have assembled materials from the worldwide field of children’s favorite readings. Thus basic reading attitudes and habits are developed through the purposeful use of interesting and significant content. Using this series of readers, the children can learn to read first, and then read to learn in their future life.
Basic readers, Book Five for primary and middle school students, is really a good book for kids to learn knowledge of the world, culture of different nations, important values among different peoples. Language is so simple and vivid including poems, fairy tales, essays, short stories and myth. Although the book may be written mainly for American pupils or teenagers, they writings are mostly proper for Chinese Children even adults to learn or read for fun or for knowledge. The reading experience of this book is such fun that you have wonderful pictures of those warm, testing and thrilling moments long after you have read them. I recommend readers who have basic command of English try reading it.
这本Book five，从去年看到今年，今天终于看完了。还记得最初把这一系列6本加入到书架上时我那满心欢喜期待，而今，看完这满书或温暖动人或惊险刺激的小故事，回想这一年来发生在亲人和自己身上的故事，真是感慨万千。 不知道是这套循序渐进的书本的功力，还是去年从lv3啃到lv8的流利说的功力，这本book six的后半部分看得算顺畅，自己能明显感觉到自己英语阅读水平的提升。 除此之外，是生活技能、各种常识复习积累的过程，没有语言界限的那种。这体现在今年西北自由行，看到西北的山和草原、牛羊和水草时，居然能和司机聊气候的形成、地理地貌的变迁。可是如果不是这几本basic readers，这些小学初中学过的东西，早已忘记。 最后，以这本里面临结尾的一首诗的几句结束： He guided her trembling feet along, Proud that his own were firm and strong. His young heart happy and well content. ...... I hope some fellow will lend a hand To help my mother, you understand, If ever she's poor and old and gray, When her own dear boy is far away.
作为课本编写得挺好，有散文有故事有诗歌，每篇文章后面都附带思考性问题。 课文既有思想品德教育方面的，也有历史地理等知识拓展方面的，有本国内容，也关注世界各地的风俗习惯、故事传说，视野比较开阔。 里面有个有趣的错误，在阿拉丁神灯里面，把阿拉丁说成是中国孩子，配图是个梳着长辫子做清朝打扮的男孩子。不知这误会到底从何而来
A best way to learn about a different culture is to read its legends. People build their values and form characters during early ages. The suitable reading materials lead children growing properly.
好书！通俗易懂，书里有中国人耳熟能详的阿里巴巴与四十大盗，阿拉丁神灯故事，还能了解世界各国的民俗风情，比如波多黎各每个学校每个班级都有自己的小菜园子，学生要学习如何种菜！
忽然就完了，然后我想起我看这本书已经很久了。毕竟是给小孩看的书，我觉得里面的故事没有多吸引我，但用来熟悉一下英语是很好的。

看了pre 到book1-5这六册，每册的阅读难道都递进增加。从一本一两个小时，六个小时，到后面的12个小时，20个小时……，这本书花了近27个小时看完，笔记778条。真心真心推荐大家看这个系列的书，表达地道。适合初学者更适合老师。终于要开始读basic readers book six ！哇哇哇，读完一个系列的书感到有那么小丢丢的成就感呢。加油鸭，嘎嘎。
