The rights of women The book 《The wrongs of women 》is a pioneer book of women’s right. It described the woman’s social and family situation before 300 hundred years ago. The story was about high-class Maria who was not only unjustly imprisoned in a mental hospital by her husband George Venables, but also took their children away. Maria became friend of a nursing staff Jamie a poor lower-class woman. After knowing that Maria without any mental problem, Jamima brought her a few books. Some of them with notes by Henry Darnford, who also lived in the same hospital, so Maria fall in love with him. They began to find every chance for meeting and communication. Darnford told about his degenerate life, that he woke up in a mental hospital after a night of alcoholism, but he couldn’t persuade the doctor to release him. Jamima told Maria and Darnford the story about herself. She was an illegitimate child. Jemima's mother died when she was a baby, which made Jemima's status was very worse in the family. Therefore, she was forced to become a servant of her father's family and later became an apprentice, but her teacher beat her, refused to give her food and raped her. When the man's wife found Jamiema pregnant with his child, she kicked her out of the house. Unable to support herself, she beat off her child and became a prostitute. Later, she was adopted by a rich man who seemed to be obsessed with all kinds of fun, such as food, love, etc. After the man died, she worked as a caregiver in this hospital. Later, Maria told her experience. She said that her parents loved their eldest son Robert more than other siblings, and how Robert treated his younger brothers and sisters "arbitrarily". In order to escape from this unfortunate home, Maria went to her neighbor's house and fell in love with their son George Venables who was a respectable young man in front of people; but in fact, he was a wandering person. After Maria's mother died, her father adopted the housekeeper as a mistress. One of Maria's rich uncles preferred her, but he didn't understand Venables true character, so he arranged a wedding for her and gave Maria 5,000 pounds. Maria soon learned about her husband's true character. She tried to ignore him and focused on cultivating her appreciation of literature and art, but Venables became more and more indulgent, after lots of gambling the family went to bankrupt. Maria became pregnant soon after her husband forced her to have sex. Since Maria's uncle was going to the Europe, he warned Maria what would happen if she left her husband. This is the first time that separation and divorce have been mentioned in the novel. Maria seems to regard her uncle's words as inspiration, not a warning. Venables tried to pay one of his friends to seduce Maria (a man named "Mr. S") so that he could identify Maria as an adulteress and then divorce her. After that, Maria tried to leave Venables. She began to escape and managed to live in several different places. She was lived with other women who were also betrayed by their husband, but Venables could find her anyway. When she tried to leave England with her newborn child and the property left to them by her late uncle, Vinebles found the child and imprisoned Maria in a mental hospital. This book was written by Mary Wollstonecraft in 18 century who was mother of Mary Shelley, the latter was the author of the the first Science fiction 《Frankenstein》, and her son in low was the famous poet Shelley. As the interpreter said this book isn’t easy to translate, for me it’s difficulty to read.
