After reading Yang Zhou’s Zhang Yitang: The Ambition of a Genius, one image stayed with me: a man who had already stood on the world stage of mathematics, surrounded by applause and honor, quietly returning to his desk to face mathematical problems that offered little applause and might never yield an answer. For the first time, I began to understand what “ambition” can truly mean. We usually understand ambition as the desire for greater wealth, higher status, greater fame, or wider recognition. But Zhang Yitang’s ambition seems almost the opposite: he did not primarily want the world to see him; he wanted to see a mathematical truth that others had not yet seen. It is a very unusual kind of ambition. What moved me most about The Ambition of a Genius was not the familiar story of an ordinary man becoming a mathematical giant, but the glimpse it offered into how a true creator actually lives. Zhang Yitang’s early life was filled with hardship. He studied mathematics at Peking University, experienced serious difficulties in building an academic career, and even worked jobs far removed from mathematics. Later, he taught at a university in the United States for many years without becoming a widely known public figure. Then, in 2013, his breakthrough related to the twin prime problem suddenly drew worldwide attention to a mathematician who had spent years quietly thinking about mathematics. Yet the deeper lesson is that his success did not begin in 2013. 2013 was simply the year the world finally noticed him; it was not the year he finally became himself. Those are two completely different things. Many people’s lives are driven by external evaluation. If others praise us, we continue; if nobody notices us, we begin to doubt ourselves; if a project produces no result, we look for another direction. For a true creator, however, feedback from the outside world is not always the most important thing. The problem itself is. I think this is the deepest meaning of “the ambition of a genius.” What Zhang Yitang remained committed to were the “big problems” of mathematics. And the defining feature of a great problem is that it does not promise an answer simply because you have worked on it for several years. You may work for ten or twenty years and still have no result. Choosing a great problem therefore also means choosing a certain kind of solitude. When I used to read about mathematicians, I was easily attracted by the word “genius.” But after reading about Zhang Yitang, I increasingly feel that “genius” may not be the most important thing for us to learn from him. What is truly worth learning is his relationship with a problem. A person who can stay with a problem for years, without leaving because there is no applause, without giving up because there is no immediate result, and without believing that age has closed the door of possibility—that person possesses something rare. This kind of strength goes beyond mathematics. It is a form of commitment to the direction of one’s life. One detail particularly stayed with me: after becoming famous, Zhang Yitang did not simply immerse himself in his achievements. When the tide of attention receded, he returned to his mathematical path. In some ways, this is even more thought-provoking than the mathematical breakthrough itself. Continuing to be a creator after achieving success can be harder than achieving success in the first place. Flowers can make us stop. Applause can make us satisfied. Fame can make us increasingly concerned with how others see us. But genuine creation requires a return to the thing itself. This is true of mathematics, science, art, and even spiritual practice. This is one of the strongest lessons I took from the book: something truly worth doing does not necessarily produce results at the beginning. It may produce no visible result for a very long time. But if the question is important enough, the process itself already has value. This reminds me of my recent reading about mathematicians and physicists such as Yang Chen-Ning, Yau Shing-Tung, and Srinivasa Ramanujan. Although they lived in different eras and followed very different paths, they shared something important: they were deeply captured by certain questions. Not because those questions were easy, but precisely because they were difficult enough to deserve a life. I increasingly feel that the important question in life is not only “What do I want to accomplish?” but also “What question is worthy of my sustained attention?” The first question can easily create anxiety. The second can make us quiet. Once we find a question truly worth pursuing, many irrelevant things naturally begin to recede into the background. The greatest inspiration Zhang Yitang gave me is the power of subtraction. Less pursuit of fame. Less dependence on immediate results. Less sensitivity to external judgment. Concentrating our limited life and attention on what truly matters. In a sense, this is also a highly efficient algorithm for living. If a person’s attention is divided among a hundred things, it is difficult to go sufficiently deep in any one direction. But if a person can remain faithful to one direction for a long time, he may reach depths that ordinary effort cannot reach. Of course, this does not mean everyone should spend decades staking their life on a mathematical problem like Zhang Yitang. We do not need to copy his life. What we should learn is his attitude toward what truly matters. Find your own question. Then work on it slowly. Work on it for a long time. Even if nobody knows about it yet. After reading The Ambition of a Genius, I feel that perhaps we should redefine the word “ambition.” A higher form of ambition is not necessarily “I want to become a great person.” It may instead be: “I want to understand one truly important question.” If we eventually succeed, that is wonderful. But even if we fail, if we genuinely see something that had previously remained unseen, then the life we spent pursuing it was not wasted. Perhaps this is what is most beautiful about a creator. He does not begin because he knows he will certainly succeed. He begins precisely because he is willing to move forward without knowing the result. Zhang Yitang’s story has made me realize that the most precious part of life is not necessarily the moment we finally stand on a podium. What may be most precious is sitting at your desk for decades without applause, and still continuing. The world may not see you. But you see a question. You may not yet have an answer. Yet you are willing to keep searching. That alone is already a remarkable way to live. And I think this is the deepest sentence the book leaves with me: Do not rush to prove that you are a genius. First, find a question worthy of a lifetime of thought. When a person truly finds such a question, ambition is no longer about demanding something from the world. to devote a finite life to an infinite search for understanding.
