I love how deep and clean it cuts. They drink, travel, quarrel, laugh. The cafés are full, the glasses heavy, but the silence grows. “Couldn’t we live together, Brett? Couldn’t we just live together?” “I don’t think so. I’d just tromper you with everybody. You couldn’t stand it.” “I stand it now.” It’s not strength. It’s a man swallowing himself. So much love wasted in circles. Brett seeks pleasure but finds no joy. Jake watches with a cool face and a needle inside his chest. The bullfights, the trains, the sunlight—screens for an ache with no exit. She gives just enough—a glance, a word—to make men feel chosen, then drifts away, leaving only longing. He knows she loves him, but believes she only wanted what she couldn’t have. That’s not it. She simply had no way out, so she tried to burn herself into ashes. She’s thirty-four now, with beautiful lines at the corners of her eyes. Beautiful, magnetic, and utterly fallen—she is a true goner, a goner with his heart. At the end they ride through Madrid. “We could have had such a damned good time together,” she says. “Isn’t it pretty to think so?” he says. The sun rises. No churches, no savior. There’s nothing new under the sun.
Hemingway’s spare prose weaves a poignant tapestry of disillusionment and quiet resilience, making The Sun Also Rises a timeless meditation on finding meaning amid uncertainty. The characters’ quiet struggles—their longing for connection, their quiet courage to keep going—resonate deeply, a gentle reminder that even in life’s fragmented moments, there’s grace in perseverance. It’s a book that lingers not with grand drama, but with soft truths about human resilience, leaving one with a warm appreciation for the quiet strength that carries us through.
1:Don't get sore ; I don't mean it. 2:every once in a while. 3:“Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already? 4:Don't you be rash. 5:Don't be cross with Robert, 別生羅伯特的氣 6:Brett was damned good-looking. 7:At one time or another I had probably considered it from most of its various angles. . 8: get in a frightful row. 9:I lay awake thinking and my mind jumping around. 10:“Don't be an ass.” 11: It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing. 12:There was the pleasant early-morning feeling of a hot day. 13:This is on me. 14:He just gets on my nerves. 15:You've got hell's own drag with the concierge now. 16:Don't be an ass. 17:let's not get daunted. 18:You can't blame him such a hell of a lot. 19:He said it with an air of superior knowledge that irritated both of us. 20:You've got a rotten chance. 21:What a damn-fool thing to do. 22:It sounds like a swell life, 這生活聽起來真棒。 23:Our stay on earth is not for long. Let us rejoice and believe and give thanks. 24:All our biggest business men have been dreamers. Look at Ford. Look at President Coolidge. Look at Rockefeller. Look at Jo Davidson 25:What rotten luck for me. 26:It reflects discredit on me. 27: you might not be such a bloody ass. 28:You were quite green, Robert. 29:she was telling him not to be a ruddy ass. 30:have such a hell of a happy life 過着如此幸福的生活 31: I'm going to get a little sleep. 32:Let's roll for it. 33:I can't stand it to think my life is going so fast and I'm not really living it. 34:You can't get away from yourself by moving from one place to another. There's nothing to that. 35:It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing.
如第一部中,Cohn提議旅行的原因是“I can't stand it to think me life is going so fast and I'm not really living it.”(想着人生如此飛逝,我卻從未真正活過,我實在是忍無可忍。) 再如第二部中,同伴們一一睡去,Jake獨自失眠,突然冒出一句“There is no reason why because it is dark you should look at things differently from when it is light.”(你沒有理由因爲身處黑暗就和身處光亮所見不同。) Don Manuel在Fiesta上耍煙火時,“The people shouted as each new luminous paper bubble careened, caught fire, and fell.”(人們在尖叫,隨着每一個新點亮的紙泡搖曳、着火、墜落。) 在第三部Jake回到巴黎後,他搭車去酒店,“The car was powdered with dust. I rubbed the rod-case through the dust. It seemed the last thing that connected me with Spain and the fiesta.”(車上遍是塵埃。 在第二部的結尾,旅行團四散零落,以這樣一句結束:“The three of us sat the table, and it seemed as though about six people were missing.”(我們三人坐在桌邊,彷彿約有六個人不見了。)
可能裏面的精神真的有被傳遞到一些,映射了一些在我身上叭 行文主調是尋歡作樂,卻會有突如其來猛刺中內心的句子; “Don't you ever get the feeling that all your life is going by and you're not taking advantage of it? Do you realize you've lived nearly half the time you have to live already? “You're only a case of arrested development.” “你僅僅是囿於過去成就的囚徒” 想起一句相似的歌詞: “ I play and swim today as I am left behind in every way by the train." “ So dancing the night away!”
The sun also rises as one generation passed away and another comes, but the earth abides forever. (海明威的書很適合作英語讀物啊,通俗易懂) “One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth forever... The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to the place where he arose... The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits... All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again.”
never once did he look up. The sun also rises,名字起得真好。寫這個讀後感的時候,正好放到那首我超級喜歡的the sun is shining down。
The language feature of the novel is actually very basic, no advanced words or syntax in sight, sometimes it can be even very "incoherent" for the lack of conjunctions. But still it does not guaranteened the easiness of understanding----- inundating American slangs drive me crazy!!!! Seems like it is written by a drunk man to me lol. And the content just kinda proved it---- cause what i can see is nothing more than a flamboyant society where people gave in to indulgence not only in sex but in intemperate. The beaten generation it is called. Just like Fitzgeral's jazz age. Very distinctive an age but not a pleasure to reexamine cause it pushes the boundaries of our sobriety. Maybe I'm too conservative😂, as boring as a Puritan Shoot, as i am writing, i find my review is quite diffusive as well lol. Sure sure, no right to judge Hemingway[捂臉] Ohhhhh btw! What is interesting is that tho seems like i do not like the lack of abstinence, but i found the Great Gatsby extremely fascinating!!! Maybe the core problem is just the languages----- the great Gatsby is written in a language so impressive that i can only call it "divine beauty"😍✨✨✨
